The Rankings

The Worm Coffin is the tournament favorite for soft plastic storage in both freshwater and inshore saltwater applications. 72 individual sleeves hold paddle tails, jerk shads, and soft stick baits separated by color and size. The opaque panels block UV, which degrades plastic over a season in direct sun. Opens flat on the deck for full access without putting the bag down.
| Capacity | 72 worm compartments |
| Binder style | Zippered foldout |
| UV protection | Opaque panels |

Plano's EDGE Binder stores 12 tray faces (6 double-sided) in a spine-bound system that opens like a book and shows full tray contents without removing individual trays. Faster than any box-within-box system for lures you're actively cycling through. Each tray face seals individually with the DRYSHIELD gasket before the binder cover seals the whole system.
| Capacity | 6 double-sided trays |
| Feature | Ring binder spine |
| Seal | DRYSHIELD gasket |

Zerust VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) liner technology continuously releases molecules that bind to metal surfaces and prevent oxidation — the correct storage solution for treble-hook plugs, crankbaits, and any metal lure with exposed hardware. The Zerust liner dramatically reduces hook rust on plugs stored through the offseason or in humid boat compartments.
| Capacity | 17 sections |
| Lid | Zerust anti-rust liner |
| Size | 3600 tray compatible |

Soft plastics treated with attractant oils (garlic, anise, shrimp) leak those oils onto everything in the same tackle box — staining, dissolving labels, and creating a mess. Plano's Liqua-Bait trays seal with a positive latch that contains the oils and also traps the scent rather than airing it out. Use these trays exclusively for oiled soft plastics.
| Material | Polypropylene with sealed lid |
| Feature | Sealed to prevent worm oil leak |
| Scent | Retains attractant |

Deck-mounted tackle storage on a kayak keeps working lures at arm's reach without opening a bag or hatch. The BlackPak Pro mounts to any Scotty, RAM, or YakAttack track system, holds 3 reversible tray inserts for a day's selection, and has integrated tool loops for pliers and hook remover. The correct complement to a larger bag stored under the deck.
| Mount | Scotty/RAM/YakAttack compatible |
| Feature | Reversible insert trays |
| Use | Deck-mounted on kayak |
Soft Plastic Compatibility Issues
Not all soft plastics are compatible with each other in the same tray. Plastics with different hardness levels (different durometer) will melt and fuse together over time — especially in a hot boat compartment. Straight worms and stick baits should store separately from paddle tails, craws, and swimbaits with different resin formulations. When in doubt: store each style in its own sealed tray. The cost of a $9 tray is far less than replacing fused soft plastics.
Color Inventory Management
A functional color system for inshore fishing has: natural (mullet, pilchard, greens/silvers for clear water), chartreuse/white (stained water and night fishing), pink/red (finicky fish, calm conditions), and dark (black, purple, dark green for dawn/dusk and deep water). You don't need 30 colors to catch fish — you need 4–6 that match bait in your fishery. More colors mean more time staring at tackle boxes and less time fishing.
End-of-Season Storage Prep
Before off-season storage: remove all soft plastics from trays (they continue to migrate oils that damage hard plastic tray walls over winter storage). Remove all rusty hooks and replace them. Clean tray compartments with a dilute dish soap solution. Dry completely before reassembling. Store the entire system in a climate-controlled environment if possible — extreme heat (160°F in a Florida storage unit in August) melts soft plastics together permanently and degrades foam in grub tails.
Tournament Bag Setup for Inshore Fishing
A functional inshore tournament setup carries: 2 rigged spinning rods in holders, 1 tray of working soft plastics for current conditions (changed at the dock based on tide phase and water clarity), 1 tray of hard plastic topwater and subsurface plugs, 1 tray of terminal tackle (jig heads in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 oz; weedless hooks in 3/0, 4/0, 5/0; swivels; split rings), and a leader pouch with 20 and 30-pound fluorocarbon in 12 and 18-inch lengths. Everything else is bench weight.
