The marine battery market is in the middle of a generational shift. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries weigh a third of equivalent lead-acid, deliver consistent voltage to 95% depth of discharge, last 3,000+ cycles, and have fallen in price to the point where the total cost of ownership beats lead-acid on most boats. AGM batteries remain a sensible choice for cranking and for boats with limited charging infrastructure — but the writing is on the wall.
The Rankings

Battle Born popularized lithium marine batteries and the 100Ah is still the benchmark. Built-in BMS, 3,000-cycle life, and a 10-year warranty that the company actually honors. Drop-in replacement for a Group 27 AGM at one-third the weight.

60% of Battle Born's price for 85% of Battle Born's performance. Five-year warranty, Bluetooth monitoring app, and excellent cold-weather performance. The right pick for boaters upgrading multiple batteries at once.

Pure lead AGM with extreme cranking amps and deep-cycle capability in one battery. The Odyssey 31M starts diesels in cold weather, runs house loads when off, and lasts 8+ years if charged properly. The go-to AGM for cruising boats that haven't switched to lithium.

Mil-spec AGM with thick plates designed for deep-cycle service. 1,000-cycle life at 50% DoD and the best customer service in the AGM market. The standard for sailboat house banks before the lithium era.
| Capacity | 125Ah |
| Type | AGM deep-cycle |

Spiral-wound AGM cranking battery that survives the vibration of outboards and the constant cycling of bass boats. Not for house duty — but for cranking only, the BlueTop is the most durable starting battery made.

Lithium vs AGM
On a 10-year ownership horizon, lithium beats AGM on cost-per-cycle, weight, usable capacity, and charge speed. AGM beats lithium on upfront cost, on cold-cranking performance below 20°F, and on tolerance to charging-system neglect. For house banks on cruising boats, the answer in 2026 is almost always lithium. For cranking duty on outboards, AGM is still the right answer.
Cranking vs Deep-Cycle vs Dual-Purpose
Cranking batteries deliver high amperage for short durations and tolerate few deep discharges. Deep-cycle batteries deliver moderate amperage for hours and tolerate hundreds of discharge cycles. Dual-purpose batteries split the difference and are the right choice for small boats with a single battery — they crank, they run a fishfinder for 8 hours, they don't excel at either.
Charging Lithium
Lithium batteries need a lithium-compatible charger. A standard lead-acid charger will undercharge a lithium pack (because it tapers voltage too early) or fail to balance cells. Buy a charger that explicitly supports LiFePO4 chemistry — Victron, Mastervolt, and Sterling Power all make excellent options. Your engine alternator may also need a DC-DC charger between it and the lithium bank to protect the alternator.
Installation Considerations
Lithium batteries are not drop-in replacements electrically. You'll typically need: a lithium-compatible inverter/charger, a battery monitor (the SOC indicator on an AGM doesn't translate), a properly sized BMS (built into most marine lithium batteries), and possibly a DC-DC charger from the alternator. Budget $500–1,500 in supporting infrastructure on top of the battery cost.
