Gelcoat is the thin pigmented outer layer of a fiberglass boat. It's also the most expensive surface on your boat to repair — a full restoration of an oxidized 25-foot hull runs $3,000–6,000 at a yard. Wax is the cheap product that prevents oxidation, slows UV degradation, and keeps your boat looking ten years younger than it is.
We tested ten waxes and polymer sealants over a brutal Florida summer — south-facing storage, no cover, daily sun exposure. Here is what survived.

The wax marine pros have used for 40 years. Carnauba blend, lasts 6 months in the sun, and the application is dead simple — wipe on, let haze, buff off. Nothing fancy, nothing trendy, and nothing outperforms it for the money.

Wax vs Polymer Sealant vs Ceramic
Carnauba wax gives the deepest visual gloss but lasts only 3–6 months. Polymer sealants last 4–8 months and shed water better than wax. Ceramic coatings last 1–3 years, resist most chemicals, and produce the deepest hardness — but require careful prep and are unforgiving of application mistakes. For most owners, a polymer sealant twice a year is the sweet spot of protection and effort.
Compounding First
Wax on oxidized gelcoat is wax on chalk. You must remove the oxidized surface layer first with a polishing compound — by hand for light oxidation, with a rotary or dual-action buffer for moderate, with a wool pad on a rotary for severe. After compounding, polish to a high gloss before sealing. Skipping this step is the single most common mistake DIY owners make.
Application Method
Work in shade, on a cool surface (not direct sun). Apply with a foam applicator pad in 2×2 foot sections. Let the wax haze fully (typically 5–10 minutes) before buffing off with a clean microfiber. Use a separate clean microfiber for the final wipe-down. Never apply wax to non-skid — it makes it dangerously slippery.
Frequency
In Florida sun without a cover, wax twice per season minimum — spring and mid-summer. In cooler climates with covered storage, once per season is adequate. Top-up spray detailer after every wash extends wax life dramatically and only takes five minutes.
