Our Review Methodology
At TopBoatGear, every product recommendation follows a structured evaluation process. Here is exactly how we assess marine gear.
Step 1: Category Research
Before evaluating individual products, we map the category — understanding what features matter, what price points exist, and what real boat owners report in forums, owner groups, and review sections.
Step 2: Product Shortlisting
We shortlist products based on:
- Sales volume and real-world adoption by boaters
- Manufacturer reputation and warranty support
- Price-to-feature ratio across the category
- Specific marine-owner feedback (saltwater durability, install simplicity, corrosion resistance)
Step 3: Hands-On Evaluation
Where possible, our reviewers test products in real on-water conditions. Evaluation criteria include:
| Criterion | What We Check |
|---|---|
| Installation | Ease of setup on a boat |
| Performance | Does it work as advertised over multiple outings? |
| Durability | Corrosion resistance, UV stability, saltwater exposure |
| Compatibility | Works with standard 12V marine systems |
| Storage | Fits in typical marine storage compartments |
Step 4: Research Validation
For products we cannot physically test, we conduct structured secondary research:
- Minimum 50 owner reviews analyzed across platforms
- Forum threads from marine communities (The Hull Truth, iboats, Cruisers Forum)
- Comparison of manufacturer specs against independent marine test data where available
Step 5: Scoring & Ranking
Products are ranked on a weighted scorecard. Top picks must score well across all categories — a product that excels in one area but fails in durability will not earn a top recommendation.
Transparency
We note clearly in each review whether the product was physically tested or research-validated. Affiliate relationships never affect scores or rankings.
