Materials
Marine vinyl is the standard surface. Look for at least 32 oz/yd weight, mildew resistance, and UV stabilization. Stitching should be Tenara or another PTFE thread — standard polyester thread degrades in two seasons of sun. Foam should be closed-cell so it doesn't absorb water. Plywood substrates should be marine-grade okume or starboard composite, never standard fir plywood.
Helm vs Leaning Post vs Bench
Helm seats are for sitting at the wheel for long runs. Leaning posts are vertical structures you lean against while standing — the standard for center console fishing boats. Bench seats are passenger seating. Most center console builds today combine a leaning post with a flip-up bolster at the helm for the captain, and a separate bench for passengers.
Recovering vs Replacing
If the frame is solid and the foam is intact, recovering with new marine vinyl is a $200–400 job that brings a tired seat back to life.
