The Test
Each cooler was pre-chilled overnight, loaded with 20 lbs of crushed ice and 10 lbs of dry product, and stored in a 90°F garage with the lid opened twice daily. We measured ice remaining at days 3, 5, 7, and 9.
Yeti vs RTIC
Yeti's lawsuit history against RTIC ended with RTIC redesigning their products to avoid patent infringement, and the post-lawsuit RTIC is genuinely competitive on cooling performance. Where Yeti pulls ahead is in execution: hinges feel tighter, latches close more positively, the lid gasket seals better over years of use, and the accessory ecosystem is genuinely deeper. Both brands are good; Yeti is better; RTIC is a better value.
Soft Coolers
Soft coolers hold ice 2–4 days versus 7–9 for premium hard coolers, but they pack into spaces a hard cooler can't reach and don't damage the boat when they slide around. Every center console should have one soft cooler in addition to the main hard cooler — beverages in the soft, fish in the hard.
Pre-Chilling and Loading
Pre-chill the cooler overnight with sacrificial ice you'll dump in the morning. Load with 2 parts ice to 1 part product by weight. Block ice lasts 3× longer than cubed; combine both — block at the bottom, cubed packed around items. Keep the cooler in shade when possible. Drain only when essential — cold meltwater holds temperature better than dry cooler walls.
